We all end up buying yarn that we can’t always use, whether that be extra skeins, mini skeins, half-used skeins or scrap balls of yarn. I bought an advent calendar filled with mini skeins from Green Letter Day and I was dying to use it all up in one big project, so I went ahead and created the Scrappy Stripes Sweater. It’s perfect for using up leftover yarn that you’re not quite sure what to do with.
This sweater is knit from the top down, knitted flat at first to create the crew neck shaping, and then worked in the round. Next, stitches are picked up around the raw edges around the neckline to knit the collar. The main color and contrast colors change every two rows to create thin stripes which are ideal for using scrap yarn. Finally, once the ends are woven in and the work is blocked, the Scrappy Stripes Sweater is ready to wear!

The model pictured in the photo above is wearing size S and is 5’4” (162.4cm) and has a bust size of 32” (81 cm) in circumference.
HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR SIZE:
Find your bust measurements below. Positive ease is built into the pattern, meaning final measurements are 0-2” (0cm-5cm) on top of that number. This creates a closely fitting sweater without a lot of extra fabric.
To accurately choose your size, please refer to the notes section at the end of the pattern (page 7) where you will find a sizing chart and instructions to best help you select a size to knit. There is also a brief note for how to make modifications.

S – 32-34” bust
M – 36-38” bust
L – 40-42” bust
XL – 44-46” bust
2XL – 48-50” bust
3XL – 52-54” bust

DIFFICULTY: ADVANCED BEGINNER
You will need to know how to cast on, knit, purl, M1R, M1L, M1PW, K1fb, backwards loop cast on, ktbl, ptbl, K2tog, bind off.
MATERIALS NEEDED:
- Size US 6/4mm 29” circular needles (those knitting larger sizes may wish to use larger needles)
- Size US 6/4mm 9” circular needles or double pointed needles (for the sleeves)
- Size US 5/3.75mm 9” circular needles or double pointed needles (for the sleeve cuffs)
- Size US 5/3.75mm 16” circular needles (for the collar)
- Row Counter (optional)
- 4 Stitch Markers, 3 in one color, 1 in a second color to note where your BOR marker is once you join in the round.
- Darning needle
- Scissors
- Yarn: Total yards 704(802, 928, 1063, 1178)(1326, 1450, 1585, 1717) or 642(732, 847, 970, 1075) (1209, 1322, 1445, 1566) meters of a DK weight (Size 3) yarn. I knit my sample using Green Letter Day superwash merino wool. Depending on how many different color stripes you would like to include (the sample uses a 24 mini skein advent for the CC stripes), you will need the following amounts for the MC and the CC stripes. These are totals for the yardage/meterage for the MC and the CC stripes as 1 entity, not per stripe. Total yarn used for MC (dark blue in the sample): 422(481, 557, 638, 707) (796, 870, 951, 1030) yards or 385(440, 509, 588, 646)(728, 795, 870, 942) meters Total yarn used for CC (stripes): 282(321, 371, 425, 471) (530, 580, 634, 687) yards or 258(294, 340, 388, 430)(485, 530, 580, 628) meters. Please note that yardage is estimated and may vary depending on the yarn used per the project, gauge verifications and/or other modifications that you may make.
